<p>Rose Bonavita, of 224 Depew Street, in Peekskill, NY worked on the assembly line of Eastern Aircraft during World War II. In 1943, she and her partner, Jennie Fiorito, of Ossining “… established a record by drilling 900 holes, driving more than 3,345 rivets and, thus, completing the entire trailing edge wing-assembly in less than 6 hours on a single shift.” <span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>The wing assembly was “… approved by Navy inspectors without a single bit of reworking.”<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>

<p>(The Evening Star, Vol. XVII – No. 136, Peekskill, Friday, June 11, 1943) Rose Bonavita was one of several women in the U.S. who became a representative of the fictional icon for the war effort: “Rosie the Riveter.” <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p>“The Irony of Rosie” honors Peekskill’s “Rosie the Riveter” and the countless women who went to work during World War II.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>This performance by artist, Carla Rae Johnson, highlights the wartime contributions made by women and metaphorically expresses the “irony” of these skilled workers being asked to return to their ironing boards at home when the war ended. We all stand on the shoulders of the “Rosies” who “forever transformed the way women participated in American society.”<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
