Artist Statement

This installation, throughout Pugsley Park in the center of Peekskill, NY, was part of Peekskill Project 2004 sponsored by the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA, now HV MOCA). For this installation, a commentary on the war in Iraq, every tree in the park was spray-painted with a non-toxic, water-based, red tempera paint from the ground to 5 ft. up.

Six sculptures comprise this installation. Each sculpture represents an different stage in the creative process, from conception to execution.  The theme of music is suggested throughout the installation.

Gray Matters: The Last Library was designed and created in 1989-90 to commemorate books as our primary receptacles for knowledge while directing our gaze to the acceleration of technological changes which alter the ways we package, preserve, and disseminate what we know.

This is an installation titled “Spirits of the Underground Railroad” created for Peekskill Project 2005. In front of a house known to be a site on the Underground Railroad, I installed 2 “bottle trees” and a fabric shadow of a running man. Bottle trees are a tradition in the Deep South. Evil spirits are believed to be captured in the upside-down bottles.  In this installation, the bottles are open and facing up to release the kind and caring spirits of agents on the Underground Railroad: those who aided escaping slaves in the 1800’s. A label on each bottle bears the name of an URR conductor.

Marcel Duchamp meets the 104^th U.S. Congress in “Windows on Greene Street – 1995

Three installations composed of a painting: “Newt Descending a Staircase”, a large Plexiglas: “The Mother Stripped Bare by her Congress, Even”, and a cage filled with toilet tissue “Why Not Squeeze?”, comprise “Windows on Greene” in SoHo for the summer of 1995.

In collaboration with the mysterious “Errors Selavy,” I have translated her penchant for puns and her frustrations with the current political climate into a display of Duchampian wit.

In “The Last Chance Salon: Games for the Millennium” my intent has been to create a space for us to “play out” our human foibles and weaknesses:  our lust for power, possessions, and privilege; the destruction of our environment; and the neglect of our fellow beings.  Playing these games in “The Last Chance Salon” might lessen their impact on the new millennium.
